Find your VOICE in this Exercise

Find your VOICE by writing these three exercises:

Look at the picture above. What is she thinking? Who is she? What does she want?

  1. Write from the perspective of her mom. Mom is looking at her daughter right now, what is MOM seeing and feeling?
  2. Little sibling (brother or sister) is also on the ledge staring at her older sibling. What is brother or sister feeling or seeing in this moment?
  3. You are the girl on the ledge. What are you thinking or feeling in this moment?

 

Do not write more than a few paragraphs. Don’t necessarily choose a POV, just go with your gut. Then, think. Which felt more natural to you? Why? What voice came out? Humous? Serious? Action? Which genre popped out?
